Why won’t my garage door close when it’s cold?
Often it’s the opener. Barbara in Smyrna had exactly that problem:
“Clay + helper came out in the freezing cold to do my garage door repair: under 55 degrees, the door would go up but not down. … Who knew a garage door box had a mother board?”
Barbara, Smyrna · testimonial
An opener is a small computer. Its logic board reads the travel limits and the safety sensors and decides when to stop and when to reverse, and a board that’s starting to fail can be pushed over the edge by cold. Grease that stiffens in a freeze makes the door heavier to move, too, and an opener with its force set right at the limit will give up. The fix may be an adjustment, new sensors or a new board. More on our openers page.
Every decade since Sewart Air Force Base
Smyrna’s housing is spread out across time. Census estimates put 5% of homes in the 1950s and 5% in the 1960s, 9% in the 1970s, 13% in the 1980s, 15% in the 1990s, 25% in the 2000s and 20% in the 2010s. Sewart Air Force Base operated here from 1941 to 1971, and Nissan built its first vehicle in Smyrna in 1983.
The town had 39,974 people in 2010 and 53,070 in 2020. Most of it lies in Rutherford County, with a small piece in Williamson County, and the Sam Davis Home and Percy Priest Lake are both close by.
What did the February 2021 ice storm do to garage doors?
In some garages, it froze the door to the slab. February 2021 brought Nashville its biggest snowstorm in a decade, and one door we know of stayed frozen to the concrete while the opener kept pulling, which bent the bottom panel and burned out the motor. Both were avoidable.
If a door won’t lift in freezing weather, stop pressing the button and free the bottom seal first; the opener doesn’t know the door is iced down. If a bottom panel did get bent, it can be hard to match on an older door, and Smyrna has plenty of houses from the 1970s and 1980s. Our panel replacement page covers when we straighten a section and when we replace it.

Smyrna is about 25 miles from our base, roughly 35 minutes without traffic by mapping estimate. That’s close enough for a repair call and an easy trip for a new door or opener. If you’re weighing a whole new door, garage door replacement lays out the options.

Smyrna garage door questions
Why does my garage door in Smyrna go up but not down in cold weather?
Often the opener’s logic board or its safety sensors are struggling with the cold. Barbara in Smyrna had a door that went up but not down whenever it was under 55 degrees, and Clay traced it to the opener’s circuit board. An adjustment, new sensors or a new board usually fixes it.
What should I do if my Smyrna garage door freezes to the ground?
Stop using the opener and leave the door closed until the ice along the bottom seal is cleared. In the February 2021 storm, an opener that kept pulling on a frozen door bent its bottom panel and burned out its own motor. Once the door is free, lift it by hand once to check it moves smoothly.
Does Smyrna have older homes with original garage openings?
Some. Census estimates put 10% of Smyrna homes in the 1950s and 1960s and 9% in the 1970s, from the years around Sewart Air Force Base. Garages that age can have low ceilings or narrow openings, which shapes what new door and opener will fit and whether the opening needs reframing first.
