Who will be hanging your door?

A crew that learned the trade on volume and chose to work slower. Chad Caro started in 1994 as a subdivision installer in Pensacola, Florida, hanging door after door on brand-new streets. In 1999 he moved to Middle Tennessee as lead commercial installer and service manager for local door companies, and in 2008 he started Kingdom Doors in Franklin. His son Clay has run it day to day since 2020.

Those commercial years count for more than you’d think on a house. Shops and big openings use heavier doors, taller track and stronger springs, and that was Chad’s work for years before he had a company of his own.

What does “to the manufacturer’s specs” look like?

It means the door goes up the way its maker designed it: the track set where the instructions say, springs sized to the actual weight of the door, and reinforcement where the opener attaches. Shortcuts there come back later as a noisy door, a dragging opener or a warranty claim that gets turned down.

Logan Randall’s custom door needed more than the instructions in the box:

Their task was to install a custom garage door for us. Him and his team went above and beyond to make sure everything was installed to the manufacturer specs. He even went to the extent to communicate with the manufacturer directly to solve and issues.

Do you install doors on new construction?

Yes, for builders and for homeowners building their own house. Builders can open an account, and Clay works through the door with whoever is choosing it, from the wood finish to the handles. If the door is going to be the face of the house, start with our custom garage doors page.

Shops, barns and barndominiums

Outbuildings are their own kind of job. A shop may want a high-lift door, so the track runs up the wall and leaves the ceiling clear for a car lift or storage. A barndominium where the garage doubles as an office wants insulation, and maybe daylight. We’ve hung both, along with barn and pole-barn doors. Insulated glass for a lived-in garage is covered on the page about garage doors with windows.

Which doors do we install?

Amarr, Carriage House Doors (we’re an authorized distributor) and National PreFinish, with LiftMaster openers, plus other major manufacturers when a project calls for one. For real wood, read the wood garage doors page before you order; the finishing step changes the schedule.

Garage door installation: questions people ask

What goes into the price of a new garage door installation?

The door itself sets most of it: size, material, insulation and glass. After that come the opener, new or reused, any framing the opening needs, whether an old door has to come down first, and the hardware. Clay or Chad will price it once they’ve measured the opening and know what you want.

What size garage door do I need?

Measure the finished opening. Common residential sizes are 8 or 9 feet wide by 7 feet tall for a single car, and 16 feet wide by 7 or 8 feet tall for a double, but doors come in many other sizes. The headroom above the opening and the space at each side matter too.

Can you insulate a garage door after it’s installed?

You can add an insulation kit to an uninsulated steel door, but it won’t match a door built insulated, with polyurethane foam filling each section. If there’s a room over the garage, or you work out there, an insulated door from the start is worth the difference.

Do you install high-lift garage doors for shops?

Yes. A high-lift door runs its track up the wall before it turns, so the open door ends up near the ceiling and leaves room underneath for a car lift, storage or a tall vehicle. It takes more headroom and a different spring setup, which is where Chad’s commercial background comes in.

Can I install a garage door myself?

We wouldn’t. Hanging the sections is the easy part; the springs have to be sized to the door’s weight, wound and balanced, and the door set in its track to the maker’s specs. Mistakes there are dangerous, and manufacturers commonly tie the warranty to a proper installation.
