Garage door repair

Garage door panel replacement for the morning you backed into it.

One bent or cracked section doesn’t have to mean a whole new door. We straighten what can be straightened, stiffen it with a steel strut, and replace the section when it’s too far gone and a match still exists.

Do you really need a whole new door?

Often you don’t. A lot of places answer a bent door with a whole new door system. We’d rather straighten the bent sections and reinforce them with struts, so the door works again and the timing of a new one stays your decision. As we’ve put it before:

“You should get to replace your garage door when you plan to, not when you accidentally put your car in reverse too early!”

We can’t promise it’ll be fixed before your spouse gets home. In most cases we can make it a working door again, and the rest of our garage door repair work is there if the bump knocked something else loose.

What does a strut do for a bent panel?

A strut is a length of formed steel fastened across the inside of a section, end to end. Once a bent panel has been worked back into line, the strut holds it there and stiffens it against the flex of opening and closing. Doors with an opener usually have one on the top section already, for the same reason.

It won’t make a creased panel look new. It will usually get it running straight, sealing against the floor and rolling past the track joints without catching.

Why is an older door so hard to match?

Manufacturers keep changing things. Panel profiles, wood-grain embossing, window cutouts and colors get discontinued, and a section from this year’s catalog can be a shade or a groove off from one made a decade or more ago. On some older doors there’s no match at all.

That changes the math. Most people carry a homeowner’s deductible of $1,000 or more, so a single section rarely gets the insurance involved. And when the door can’t be matched, replacing the whole thing can cost less than chasing one panel. If that’s where yours lands, the page on garage door replacement covers what comes next.

How fast can a cracked section be replaced?

Quickly, when the part is out there. Em Kirk had a crack that kept growing. We looked at it, ordered the section, and had it replaced within a week, with Emerson on the job:

I had a small crack that was getting larger on my garage door … They came over and assessed this quickly and I had it replaced within a week. Emerson was friendly and was great with any questions we had.

A crack in a steel section tends to spread, since the door flexes along it every time it moves. Getting it seen early is how it stays a one-panel job. If you’d like glass in the new section, that’s on the page about garage doors with windows.

Garage door panel replacement: questions people ask

Can you replace just one panel of a garage door?

Yes, when the manufacturer still makes that section in the same style, size and color. We identify the door’s maker and model first. If the section has been discontinued, the choices are straightening and strutting the damaged one, or replacing the door.

Can you replace the top panel of a garage door?

Yes. The top section is where the opener arm attaches, so it’s often the one that bends when a door is forced, and it usually carries a strut already. Replacing it follows the same rule as any other section: the new one has to match the rest of the door.

Can a dented garage door panel be fixed?

A bent section can usually be worked back into line and reinforced with a strut, so the door runs and seals properly again. Sharp dents and creases in thin steel rarely disappear completely, so if the look bothers you, a new section is the cosmetic fix when one can still be matched.

How much does it cost to replace a garage door panel?

It depends on the door’s maker and model, its width, whether it’s insulated, the color, and whether a strut will do the job instead. Getting a single section shipped from the manufacturer can matter too. Clay or Chad will tell you the price once they know which door you have.

How long does it take to get a replacement garage door section?

It depends on the manufacturer and whether the section is available. Em Kirk’s cracked panel was replaced within a week. A discontinued profile or an unusual color takes longer to track down, and on some older doors it can’t be found at all.

Is a bent garage door safe to use?

Not until someone has looked at it. A bent section can bind in the track, pull rollers loose or strain the opener, and the door may come down unevenly. Leave it where it is, keep people out from under it, and don’t keep running the opener to see if it frees up.
